You are 2 and Cool ... A Letter to My Son on His Birthday

Dear Teddy,

Today we celebrate you turning 2.  It may not seem like a big birthday, but to your Pappa and I, it is.  It seems like it was just yesterday that your father and I saw you for the first time, looked into your eyes, touched your hair, held you, and watched a piece of our hearts living outside of our bodies.

When I first held you I fell in love with you because you were mine - my child, a sudden embodiment of my heart and soul.

As I have watched you grow, another layer to my love has been added.  You are sweet and empathetic, full of boundless energy and joy, strong willed and loving.  I love you because of the little person you are becoming, a happy, energetic, fun-filled little boy.

You amaze me every day as I have watched you grow.

You overcame such odds in your first few months, showing us your strength and giving me strength I never knew I had.

These past two years have been the best a mother could ask for.  Watching you experience the world anew each day, learn new skills, and develop a (strong) personality has been a joy.

As you grow I find myself marveling at how cool you are.  I never would have expected to have so much fun with a toddler but I really do enjoy hanging out with you all day, playing with you, reading and coloring, and running in the dirt.  You are so much fun to be around.  You never stop moving and exhaust me, but every night you leave me with a smile.

You do poke and prod me, and as you have gotten older you have found nerves I didn't even know existed.  But I can never be upset with you for long because you are the happiest kid I have ever met and your sense of joy and happiness is so infections that is has rubbed off on me.

I am very lucky to be your mama - it doesn’t get any cooler than that.

Despite you turning the big 2, every day I am reminded that you are still my little boy.  When you ask to ride the slide with me, or sit on my lap on the swing, or ask "up, up" just to have me hold you.  I savor these moments because I know you won't always be like this as I watch you grow and do bigger things each and every day.

My birthday message to you is: You are awesome.  Your boundless energy, loving spirit, and kind soul come together to make you one heck of an incredible little person.  Keep growing but keep these awesome things that make you so very you.

As you journey into your next year - which I’m sure will be just as tremendous (with some terrible thrown in, let's be real) - I'm filled with anticipation to watch you grow and become more YOU.  I cannot wait to see where this next year takes you or more appropriately, where you take this next year.

Happy Birthday you amazing kid,

xoxo - Your Mamma
