The More Things Change

A year has passed since I have started this blog and started documenting our lives and my musings.  A year with a child can seem like an eternity, the days creeping by so slowly, then BAM, you look back and the 365 days have flow by in the blink of an eye.  Things are ever changing with kids, their needs and wants and favorite colors. And just as you are focused on how much things have changed, you can be surprised by how much they stay the same.  Time is a strange beast and nothing shows you the power of it more than kids.

The other day, as Teddy and I were having a full on conversation about our dog Rudy, I was marveling at how much things have changed in such a short period of time.

This time last year, we had a kid with a few words, a kid who would not hold your hand to save his life, and a kid who actually loved his diapers.

Now we have a little hand holding, potty trained, conversationalist.

But as he is changing and growing and not a baby any more, he does things that remind me how much has stayed the same.

He is still my all weather child, and probably always will be.  This year we have gotten all the use out of our duck boots, played in the snow, and sweated to bits in the summer.  We are like the postal service, no weather is keeping us from playing.  This year I have even better gloves.

Oh and he is still an early riser.  Maybe not 5:30am anymore but 6:30 is sleeping in for us on any day.

And he still breaks things.  And not little things.  No he saves up and breaks a big thing once a year, or at least that is what it seems he is going for. Last year it was Teddy and the $400 Toilet ... this year a 8x8 glass door.

And Target is still one of his favorite places to go on cruddy days. If it's raining he'll turn to us and say, "go Target?"  I mean, that's not normal right?  But he has always loved the store, so at least he's consistent.

( 2018 and 2017 comparisons - No trucks or animals were purchased in the filming of the above pictures)

But my favorite thing that has stayed the same, Teddy.  Teddy might be a talking, potty trained, going to preschool kid now, but he is still Teddy.  A sweet, fully of joy and laughter amazing presence in our every day.  Just like when he was a baby, his rough days are still not all that bad (yet, I always say yet) and I love spending my days with him.  Snuggling with him and watching random Disney or PBS shows is my favorite, second only to singing him his goodnight song, which he still asks for.

Time, you can fly by or creep by, the results will be the same. I know there are more changes coming, so many more as Teddy grows older and more independent. But what time can't change is the fun we have, the joy in each of the milestones, and the memories, that will always stay the same.

So as I look back on this fast a furious year we have lived, I am reminded that the more things change the more they stay the same.

And it's all awesome.
