Shiny and New
/So it's been pretty quiet on the blog this summer. With summer activities, days spend playing with friends and family, and Teddy running and talking to everyone who will listen, it's been quiet busy. Oh, that and Zach and I made a totally normal summer decision ... let's renovate ALL the bathrooms in the house.
I've been at Home Depot and on Pinterest every hour that I wasn't with Teddy (ok, ok, and some that I was). Teddy has become quite accustomed to running around HD and sitting still in tile stores. I've been shopping, designing, buying, returning, and working with a contractor all summer long.
MASTER BATH
We are going from a beige and brown bathroom to a sleek, modern, yet traditional bathroom.
The floor tile gave us our starting point. The charcoal and off-white tile could go either cool or warm so we decided to go with both!
Initially I was concerned with mixing metals but I found some great resources online. The best advice was to choose a dominate metal and let the other be your accent.

The rest of the space is fresh and white with Delorian Gray grout that makes the tiles pop.
To combat what could be a very stark and one dimensional shower stall, we are having the recessed niche tiled with a mini-lantern tile that has a small flower-esque pattern on it, which is reflective of the floor tile.
The floor tile will be pulled all the way from the bathroom floor into the shower for a seamless look. With the frameless sliding glass door, this should give the bathroom a much larger look than before.
We can't wait to see the finished product!
SECOND BATH
So, this is what we started with and have been working with for the past three years. Eek!! The original is so bad - weird blue tile, bead board, and fake porcelain fixtures.
Our renovation for this room was inspired by (ok copied square inch for square inch) a bathroom we saw on Houzz. The color palette is going to go from off white and strangely muted royal blue to " limestone tones, soft and soothing and not too contemporary."
This room needs to be able to transition between Teddy's room and a guest room and this design seems to fit the bill perfectly.
My favorite aspect of this room is the floor tile. It is large-format 12-by-24-inch porcelain tiles, with iridescent glass mosaic tiles running in between. The porcelain tile should stand up to a kids bathroom quite nicely and the thin mosaic line adds just a bit of character.
We were able to find the 12x24 tiles and mosaic tiles at Architectural Ceramics in Old Town. They were a joy to work with. The tiles in that store are just incredible. I saw a gold and white patterned tile that would be sweet in a kitchen if anyone is looking.
Since this is still a kids bathroom for now, I decided to add a touch of whimsy by using the Arien Grove Hook set for the towel hooks instead of towel bars. I also am hoping towel hooks will easier for Teddy to use rather than neatly put a towel over a towel bar (one can hope right?).
I honestly don't know which bathroom I am more excited to see finished. Which one do you like more?
I'll post the finished product pictures in a few weeks!!
